Hopefully it has an ALH Swap. I’ve ridden in an old non turbo diesel rabbit and it couldn’t even go up hill at 55

Went looking for the build thread to see how they stiffened it. Instead, found one with four doors >per side< which Kinja won’t let me post. That’s nuts

The PA State Police bought a few of those in the ‘80s, I believe a weighted down St. Regis could beat one up a hill quite easily.

Wow I never would have guessed it was OEM. I assumed some one grafted a Caddie bed into a 4 door rabbit

Oh, no, I was talking about the regular diesel Rabbit.

Oh okay. Yeah they are slooooow. My BIL has one as his first car. It had a hard time just going 55 up hill. It did get 60mpg tho. If you drove 55 on a flat surface.

After that he got an 02 TDI Jetta which at the time he thought was really fast. Lol. Now it’s very modified, getting into his sister’s stock TDI Golf is a reminder of just how slow his used to be.

Try taking that 48hp motor, the one that couldn’t get a Rabbit out of its own way and sticking it in a vehicle twice as heavy. Then take that heavy vehicle and add several hundred pounds of camping equipment. 29MPG city, 29MPG highway, which I assume is because you treat the throttle pedal as an on/off switch.

Back in the day, before diesels were smog checked, these were a great find as you could yank the anemic diesel and put something much better in its place and not have to worry about emission checks. And even a polluting gasoline engine was probably cleaner than the diesel it replaced.

Yeah those old non turbo Diesel engine might as well have run on coal.

You could still get away with that in a lot of places. Many states only check OBDII vehicles now.

Back in the 90's they sold fiberglass conversion kits to stretch the cabins of pretty much any pickup truck, including the smallest ones like the VW Saveiro and the Ford Pampa:
